Standing at the foot of Tennyson Down, this distinctive apartment’s sat within the cliffs of Freshwater Bay, benefiting views over the bay to the east and the English Channel to the south and west.

Located within the moat of Fort Redoubt, a Palmerston fort constructed in 1856 as a response to the threat of possible invasion by the French under Emperor Louis Napoleon, the caponiers were built to be the barrack accommodation for 24 soldiers. with its iron window shutters and rifle slots, the caponiers also provided a means of ditch defence, these original features can still be found following a sympathetic renovation by the owner to this derelict building, creating wonderful holiday accommodation in keeping with its historical value. It makes for a great base for the family to explore the delights the Isle of Wight has to offer. You’ll find a good selection of water sports nearby at Freshwater Bay and will be spoiled for choice with the 57 miles of coastline to chose from when it comes to selecting your beach day out. Head further along West Wight where you will find The Needles Park, a great day out for the family.

Enter the grounds of Fort Redoubt over the bridge which crosses the moat next to where the caponier apartments are situated. Access to the caponiers is from the forts central parade square and via a door which opens up into a striking tunnel with stairs. At the base of the stairs is where the lower apartment is located, enter through the front door into the characterful hallway. Through the double doors to your right you will come into the open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. There is a TV and warming gas stove to curl up in front of in the lounge and a fully equipped kitchen with electric oven and induction hob, microwave, lakeland coffee machine, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer and dishwasher with a dining table and seating large enough to seat the whole group. Just beyond the feature archway in the hallway is where you will find all three bedrooms, a king-size with en-suite shower room and WC, a twin room and a further king-size bedroom. The bathroom with bath and shower over and WC is located at the end of the corridor.

There is allocated parking for two cars in the forts central parade square. A table and chairs are provided to sit out and enjoy the shared grounds in the moat which is easily accessed from this apartment and a BBQ is also provided.

Absolutely gorgeous property! We were blown away by the location, history of the building, and the sympathetic restoration. A very well equipped holiday property with all those little things you normally leave at home provided. The owner was super friendly as well. Highly recommend!!!

Fort Redoubt was the perfect place to spend the wettest New Year in decades! Cheerful, warm, well-laid out, immediate access to Tennyson Down, and atmospheric, we all departed saying 'let's go there again'.

Fantastic location. Very comfortable accommodation which was enjoyed by all. Help with storing bikes greatly appreciated. A lot of stairs but soon got used to them. Unable to make the most of sitting out in the moat due to the weather. Dog owners need not worry about letting dogs roam around the moat as it is secured by fences both sides (not visibRead morele in photos). Would love to return. Hide

Very interesting place to stay and the location is excellent. You can get straight out to Tennyson Down and Freshwater Bay. Due to the nature of the property and old fortifications the apartment does not get a lot of natural sunlight even on the brightest of days and you are chasing the sun in the garden.

Lovely well equipped accommodation, in a unique setting. Enjoyed breakfast every morning in the "dry" moat, and wine in the evenings! Ideal for walking, enjoyed walking the dog every morning at 6am to Tennyson Cross! IOW is a lovely island to explore and enjoy, at a leisurely pace. Intend to return next year

Great place. A word of warning that it is not suitable for those who can't manage steep stairs and tne brick walls do pass a bit of dust onto things leant against them. Loved the views and that Tennyson Down is on the doorstep. A short walk from the supermarket (a Tesco and a wee bit further for a Sainsbury and a Co-op).

A lovely restored capioner, everything you could need is supplied however it is the only self catering accommodation I have rented that did not supply a welcome basket. I knew there were stairs to the flat however did not realise it was 19 & then another 2 sets of 8 & 7 to get to the lower caponier. This meant our elderly relatives could not come tRead moreo visit us. Also a hard slog to carry luggage & groceries. Excellent location for walking the downs, watching the bud & the bay. Hide
