It is also the gateway to the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve, with walking and cycling trails, where you can spot its clan of ancient wild goats. Other attractions include the Rock UK Adventure Centre, Gretna Green, Burns Mausoleum and the Grey Mare’s Tail, a mesmerising waterfall plunging 60 metres from Loch Skeen, all within 30 miles. Further afield enjoy the beaches at Southerness and Sandyhills.

Head through here to the sanctuary-like bathroom, which has both a spa bath and a large shower; a ground-floor WC completes the convenience.

The generous grounds include a low-walled seating area to the front of the property, while at the rear, a pretty patio furnished for al fresco dining sits just outside the sunroom. Stroll over to the large, enclosed paddock, and you’ll find pretty spots to sit and watch as the river flows past and you even have your own gate leading to the riverbank. Private parking is available for two cars.
