There is plenty to explore with ancient woodlands and well-marked footpaths available from the front door and for keen cyclists, there is access onto the National Cycle trail with route 42 and plenty of local mountain biking. Visit one of the many vibrant market towns, the closest being Monmouth with its ancient bridge and independent shops, and slightly further afield Chepstow, Abergavenny and Crickhowell, all steeped in history. The area is full of Norman castles and ancient abbeys such as the nearby Tintern Abbey, Raglan Castle, White Castle and Grosmont. There’s the Forest of Dean where you can explore not just ancient woods but nature reserves and deep caves, and the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains where you can enjoy mountain climbs, waterfalls and the River Wye.

Next, step into a stunning kitchen/dining space, a large L-shaped room with a wood burner where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine, a dining area with large table and chairs to accommodate eight guests with huge, triple aspect windows onto the garden and woodlands, and the kitchen area too. The kitchen is well-equipped with electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher, as well as lovely touches such as cookery books, and a hatch through to the lounge with shutters. In the lounge, there is also a wood burner, and the room has two seating areas, one for relaxing in in front of the Smart TV and another for reading or chatting in front of the fire. It is very bright and sunny with three south-facing windows. On the ground floor is also the biggest bedroom, with two huge windows onto the garden, and a super-king-size zip-and-link bed (which can be also be made into a twin on request) with en-suite bathroom with shower over the bath, and WC. Climb the stairs to a further three bedrooms, one super-king-size zip-and-link (which can be made into a twin on request) with stunning south-facing views, one double bedroom with the same views, and one king-size room looking over the garden and woodland. There is a bathroom with claw-foot bath and WC, and a separate shower room with shower and WC.

Outside is a spacious enclosed garden with table and chairs on the grass for summer dining, an alternative table and chairs near the house for dining and a charcoal BBQ to gather around on winter nights. Cottage was excellent and grandson loved the garden. He also enjoyed the sheep goats and pigs that visited just outside the gate. Well equipped and really versatile rooms catering from babies to the elderly. Loved our stay.

The property is incredibly spacious, with four very large bedrooms that made our stay extremely comfortable. The upstairs bathroom was especially lovely a perfect place to relax after a busy day. The hot water and shower pressure were both fantastic, which made a real difference. One of the highlights was seeing the farm animals freely roaming around pigs, sheep with lambs, deer, and chickens and there was always something new to spot each day, from woodpeckers and robins to red kites. The owner and family were so welcoming and friendly, which made the experience even more special. The farmers dogs were also very friendly and clearly very used to being around visitors and cars, confidently wandering nearby while knowing exactly what they were doing. Hide

Lovely cosy comfortable cottage, the wood burning fire was perfect on a rainy windy evening. Plenty of space to sit with views across the fields and woods. Our little grand-daughter loved watching the cows and sheep pass by and finding the tractors. A perfect place for a family weekend.

Tranquil location, plenty of space at the property for 8 adults but could use a spring clean and some extras eg a welcome hamper given its rural location, milk/bread etc would not cost a lot. Not bad value for money and we did enjoy our stay.

Lovely cottage in a lovely, tranquil location. Owners were friendly and helpful when needed, (not that we did as everything we could have needed was right there!). Would highly recommend this property if you want to get away from everything and just chill. Lovely cottage in great location, with loads of room. However there is a mile track to the cottage which is steep and very rough at present. Great for 4 wheel drive owners!

We spent a wonderfully cosy, peaceful Christmas at Lower Lodge. The house sits in a picturesque valley, away from it all but minutes from lovely Monmouth. The house is very well equipt and comfortable, but 'lived in' enough to be able to relax. The hosts are so welcoming and were very laid back about family joining us on Christmas day.

Property was fine although a little grubby in places, eg furniture and rugs in living room. The drive is very rough and I grounded my vw golf twice. A member of our party was bitten by a loose dog when opening the gate to the drive, fortunately it only bit her jeans. Overall it was OK.

A wonderful cottage in the middle of farmland and away from the hustle and bustle of busy towns and cities, woken up by the sound of green woodpeckers and occasionally the goats! Couldn't recommend it more highly, and the owners are very friendly and helpful too. So if you are looking for a country retreat away from it all ... this is perfect.
