This beautiful Georgian house, dating back over 200 years, offers the perfect country retreat in the market town of Alston. Located on the Cumberland-Northumberland border, it enjoys a position at the heart of the North Pennines. Alston dates back to Roman times and is the highest market town in England, around 1,000 feet above sea level. It’s a great location if you’re looking to lace up your boots, pop a lead on the dog and head out to explore the fells. For keen cyclists, and those with a sense of adventure, embark on a long, steep climb up Hartside Fell (29 miles), which forms part of the Coast-to-Coast Cycle Route. The historic Alston Station is the starting point for the South Tynedale Railway, England’s highest narrow-gauge railway. You can also join the Pennine Way walking trail or jump in the car on a sunny day onto the A686 and enjoy one of the AA Magazine’s ‘Ten Great Drives’.

Inside, this historic property has character and original features but has a contemporary style with perfectly proportioned rooms, each with its own unique decorative theme. As you walk through the front door into the hallway, you will find the lounge to your right, with a cosy wood burner, comfy seating and original features such as window shutters and built-in bookshelves. You will feel instantly relaxed and at home when you arrive. Opposite the lounge, across the hallway, you will find the formal dining room which offers a great space to catch up with friends or family over a celebratory meal, reminisce on the day’s events and make plans for the days ahead. The kitchen is accessed either from the dining room or hallway, and there is also a downstairs shower room, a separate WC and a utility area with a washing machine and dryer. Head up the elegant staircase to the first floor where you will find four spacious bedrooms. Also on this floor is a family bathroom with a bath to soak and relax in after a day out exploring.

For relaxation, enjoy the private enclosed walled garden while listening to birdsong. This cottage garden is secure for dogs, set across three levels with multiple seating areas, a wood-fired pizza oven, a charcoal grill, a covered seating area and bee-friendly flower beds.

We had a great weekend in the gorgeously renovated Salvin House. A lovely, grand old house that was super-comfortable and well-equipped. A really beautiful house in a gorgeous little town. We had a great time. Thank you!!!! Great food at The Cumberland Inn and Alston House. Id definitely recommend staying here.
